Clinic director, physician sentenced to prison for false Alzheimer diagnoses

An Ohio clinic director and her physician husband have been sentenced to prison after being convicted of falsely diagnosing dozens of patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

According to court documents, Sherry-Ann Jenkins and Oliver Jenkins, MD, founded the Toledo Clinic Cognitive Center, where Ms. Jenkins would administer the neurocognitive testing to patients suspected of cognitive disorders, particularly dementia and Alzheimer's disease, under the supervision of Dr. Jenkins.

However, Dr. Jenkins never saw or treated patients at the Cognitive Center, according to a Sept. 27 news release from the Justice Department.

Instead, Ms. Jenkins ordered PET scans of patients’ brains, interpreted the scans and diagnosed patients with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or other impairments, billing Cognitive Center patients and healthcare benefits programs using Dr. Jenkins' billing number.

Ms. Jenkins was sentenced to 71 months in prison and fined $25,000 while Dr. Jenkins was sentenced to 41 months in prison and fined $15,000, the release said.
