Average starting salary for 14 physician specialties

Orthopedic surgeons have the highest starting salary of any physician specialty, starting at $633,000, according to AMN Healthcare’s “2023 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives” report released July 24.

The average starting salary for 14 physician specialties in 2022 and 2023: 

  1. Orthopedic surgeons: $633,000
  2. Urologists: $540,000
  3. Gastroenterologists: $506,000
  4. Radiologists: $472,000
  5. Anesthesiologists: $450,000
  6. Hematologists and oncologists: $440,000
  7. Cardiologists: $433,000
  8. Dermatologists: $427,000
  9. Pulmonologists and critical care specialists: $418,000
  10. Obstetricians and gynecologists: $367,000
  11. Psychiatrists: $356,000
  12. Neurologists: $354,000
  13. Hospitalists: $299,000
  14. Rheumatologists: $273,000
