In its “Medical Student Lifestyle Report 2022,” Medscape surveyed medical students on why they’ve chosen their specialties.

Medscape surveyed 2,182 medical students between April 7 and May 22 on issues such as medical debt, burnout and specialty choice. 

Here’s medical student’s biggest factors when considering their specialties:

  • Personal interest in the field: 69 percent 
  • Lifestyle: 19 percent
  • Career opportunities: 7 percent
  • Research opportunities: 2 percent
  • Income: 1 percent
  • Prestige of field: 0 percent
  • Other: 2 percent
