VCU School of Medicine appoints Dr. Arturo Saavedra dean

Arturo Saavedra, MD, PhD, has been appointed dean of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond. He will also serve as executive vice president of medical affairs for VCU Health System.

Dr. Saavedra will become dean effective April 15, according to a Jan. 9 release from the medical school. He will replace David Chelmow, MD, who has served as interim dean since the start of 2022 while a national search took place for a permanent dean.

Dr. Saavedra joins VCU after serving as president and interim CEO of University of Virginia Physicians Group and chair of the department of dermatology at UVA in Charlottesville.

Prior to his time as president, Dr. Saavedra was the chief of population health and health policy for UVA Physicians Group and chief of ambulatory strategy and operations for its medical center. In his practice, he specializes in complex medical dermatology, the release said.
