Society of Thoracic Surgeons elects Dr. Thomas MacGillivray president

Thomas MacGillivray, MD, was elected president of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons at the society’s annual business meeting Jan. 23.

Dr. MacGillivray is the physician executive director and chair of the department of cardiac surgery at MedStar Health’s Heart and Vascular Institute in Washington, D.C. He began his career at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, according to a Jan. 24 release. 

Dr. MacGillivray has also served as the Jimmy F. Howell, MD, Endowed Chair in cardiovascular surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital, where he was also chief of cardiac and thoracic transplant surgery and the associate medical director of the cardiovascular intensive care unit.

Dr. MacGillivray has been a member of STS since 2003 and most recently served as the society’s first vice president.
