NCAA names chief medical officer

Deena Casiero, MD, was named chief medical officer of the NCAA.

Dr. Casiero, a sports medicine physician, will serve as a liaison between the association and student athletes, oversee the NCAA Sport Science Institute and collaborate with the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports, the association's membership health and safety committee, according to a May 31 news release from the NCAA.

Dr. Casiero currently serves as senior associate athletics director for sports medicine and head team physician at the Skorrs-based University of Connecticut, according to the release. She will step into her new role Aug. 12.
