Merritt Hawkins and AMN Healthcare laid out how many med school graduates aren't matching to residency programs in their report, "Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives."
The report is based on 2,695 physician and advanced practitioner search engagements conducted from April 1, 2021, to March 31. The report cited residency matching figures from the National Residency Matching Program.
Here's the percentage of medical school graduates not matching to a first-year residency program in 2022:
- U.S. allopathic degrees: 7 percent
- U.S. osteopathic graduates: 9 percent
- International medical graduates: 42 percent
