Dr. Jacobs started out at Quincy delivering supplies and then, at 34, decided to earn his medical degree at the Kirksville (Mo.) College of Osteopathic Medicine. He retired from the Quincy Medical Group on Sept. 30.

“I’ve never looked back. I’m glad I did it. It would have been easy to say, ‘I’m too old or it’s too hard.’ The study of medicine, then the career and the patients, which is what it’s all about — taking care of people,” Dr. Jacobs said. “That’s probably the part I will miss because when you do something to help people, it’s very rewarding.”
