Dr. Place will assume the role May 13, according to a March 30 news release from Avera Health. He will oversee the 545-bed flagship Avera McKennan Hospital, in addition to Avera Behavioral Health Hospital, Avera Human Performance Center, Avera Research Institute and other Avera McKennan locations.
Dr. Place most recently served as director of Defense Health Agency in Washington, D.C., where he oversaw Department of Defense medical programs for 9.6 million patients and 140,000 staff members.
The 3-star army general retired from his military service earlier this year, the release said.
