Physician-owned hospitals could save $1B annually: Study

Physician-owned hospitals saved $1.1 billion in 2019 when compared to the cost of care at traditional facilities over the same period, according to research commissioned by the Physician’s Advocacy Institute and the Physicians Foundation.

The report, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Connecticut and Loyola University Chicago, found that the difference in payments between physician-owned hospitals and traditional hospitals was between 8.6% and 15.2%.

The report pulled data from 186 physician-owned hospitals to compare with traditional hospitals in the same hospital referral region, controlling for patient demographics and comorbidity levels.
