Why these physicians have their eyes on AI

Artificial intelligence has been a hot topic in healthcare and for good reason.

Two physicians connected with Becker's to discuss the healthcare trends they are most excited about.

Editor's note: Responses have been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Shadi Jarjous, MD. Chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine and Vice Chair of Operations in the Department of Emergency and Hospital Medicine at Lehigh Valley Health Network (Allentown, Pa.): The healthcare trends I am most excited about are the integration of AI into EMRs to help with data analytics, predictive modeling, and documentation, which will translate to better safety, quality, and efficiency as well as value. I am also excited about the continued rapid advancement both clinically and technologically that is allowing the movement of more patient care to their homes with appropriate resources such as remote monitoring and telemedicine. Our nation's hospitals are strained with many staffing and resource challenges, and optimizing the use of those valuable resources for appropriate patients will result in better outcomes and experiences for all.

Nina Phatak, MD. Gastroenterologist at Gastroenterology Associates (Warrenton, Va.): I am most excited about artificial intelligence and its ability to help with diagnosis and aid with precision medicine. I believe it will help to improve patient outcomes and enable providers to more efficiently diagnose and treat patients.
