Physician leaders are being charged with leading AI-enabled initiatives in clinical decision making, diagnostics and care delivery models — but the speed of innovation may be outpacing the reality of leaders’ time allocation, according to “The State of Physician Leadership,” a May 11 report from WittKiefer, a leadership advisory firm.
The report draws insights from more than 20 physician executives and analyzes how physician leadership is shifting from “stewardship” toward more complex strategic roles.
Here are four findings from the report that demonstrate the growing tension between physician leaders’ expectations and realities when it comes to AI implementation:
1. Only 8% of physician executives identify AI and machine learning expertise as critical today.
2. However, 41% view it as essential for future success — a major inflection point in leadership expectations.
3. Another 8% identified digital health and technology experience as critical today.
4. However, 24% said digital health and technology would be critical looking ahead.
