This requirement stems from the end of previous flexibilities set by the Human Services Office for Civil Rights following the expiration of the COVID-19 public health emergency May 11, according to a July 23 news release from the California Medical Association.

OCR offered a 90-day transition period after the changes were made, which ends Aug. 9. Physicians can find a list of HIPAA-compliant video communication products on the HHS website.
