Physicians working abroad report widely different earnings depending on where they practice, according to a Medscape report published Nov. 24.
Medscape surveyed 1,271 physicians who either currently work abroad or aspire to do so between Sept. 8 and Nov. 3.
Here’s what expat physicians earn in three of the top destination countries:
United States:
Earning less than $50,000: 4%
Earning more than $300,000: 38%
Switzerland:
Earning less than $50,000: 0%
Earning more than $300,000: 21%
Spain:
Earning less than $50,000: 28%
Earning more than $300,000: 1%
Overall average:
Earning less than $50,000: 16%
Earning more than $300,000: 11%
Here’s a breakdown of how expat physicians say their earnings compare to what they made at home:
- Switzerland: 94% more
- United States: 76%
- Canada: 71%
- United Kingdom: 69%
- Germany: 68%
- Overall average: 68%
