Physicians get their best returns from mutual funds, according to Medscape’s 2025 report “Where Doctors Are Comfortable Investing,” published in April.
Medscape asked 7,322 physicians across 29 specialties which investments gave them the best returns, apart from their retirement plan. Here’s what they answered:
- Mutual funds (including index or bond funds): 30%
- Individual stocks: 26%
- Residential real estate/rental properties: 12%
- Exchange-traded funds: 12%
- Cryptocurrencies: 4%
- Commercial real estate/lease properties: 3%
- Annuities: 3%
- Personal property: 3%
- Medical businesses: 3%
- Individual bonds: 2%
- Other: 2%
- Nonmedical business: 1%
