Idris Evans, MD, a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, was killed early Sept. 24 in a stabbing at a home in Edgewood, Pa., according to a Facebook post from the Allegheny County Police Department.
Dr. Evans was also an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and co-medical director of the pediatric transport team at the children’s hospital, according to its website.
County 9-1-1 was notified of a reported stabbing at 12:31 a.m. on Sept. 24 where first responders located 46-year-old Dr. Evans and his wife, Gina Evans, suffering from multiple stab wounds, The Tribune-Review reported. Dr. Evans was then taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. The female was transported to an area hospital where she remains in critical condition.
A Monroeville Police Department K9 unit conducted a search and located a man behind a nearby home who had hand lacerations. He was detained and transported to an area hospital for treatment, and later identified as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway.
Detectives determined through witness interviews that Mr. Hemingway had entered the home and attacked Dr. Evans and the female victim while sleeping. He faces multiple charges including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass, the post said.
“The UPMC and University of Pittsburgh community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Dr. Idris Evans…” a spokesperson for UPMC said in a Sept. 24 statement shared with Becker’s. “Dr. Evans was a dedicated caregiver and valued member of our hospital and university communities. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time. We ask that their privacy be respected.”
