Physician pay in the worst states to practice in

Hawaii is the worst state for physicians to practice in, according to a March 18 report from personal finance site WalletHub.

The report compared the 50 states and Washington, D.C., based on opportunity and competition and medical environment. The two dimensions were then evaluated using 19 metrics, including physicians' average annual wage, the number of hospitals per capita and physician burnout rate.

Here is the average annual compensation for family physicians in the 10 worst states for physicians to practice in, according to 2023 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

3. New Jersey: $174,810
4. Massachusetts: $247,560
5. New York: $195,570
6. New Mexico: $217,190
7. District of Columbia: $210,800
8. Oregon: $207,350
