How resident pay increases year over year

The average resident’s pay increases by $13,000 after six years of training, according to data from Medscape

The “Resident Salary & Debt Report” for 2023 asked 1,000 residents across more than 29 specialties about their job satisfaction, annual income and more from April 3 to June 8.

Here is the average pay among residents with one to eight years of experience:

One year: $61,000

Two years: $63,000

Three years: $65,000

Four years: $70,000

Five years: $71,000

Six to eight years: $74,000
