How employed physicians are compensated

Thirty-one percent of employed physicians’ compensation is structured by salary only, according to Medscape’s “Employed Physicians Report 2023.”

The report included responses from 1,003 physicians across more than 29 specialties. Responses were collected from March 10 to May 31. 

Here is how employed physicians’ compensation is structured, according to Medscape

Base salary, productivity targets and other performance metrics: 32 percent

Salary only: 31 percent

Base salary and other incentives: 25 percent

Hundred percent productivity targets: 6 percent 

Other: 5 percent
