The Florida House of Representatives passed a bill May 2 that would allow healthcare providers or payers to opt out of participating in or paying for healthcare services based on their moral, religious or ethical beliefs, according to a May 3 report from the Florida Phoenix.
HB 1403, or “Protections of Medical Conscience,” reads that a healthcare provider or payer cannot be discriminated against, face adverse action for or be civilly liable for refusing to perform or pay for a specific medical procedure, but doesn’t list any specific procedures.
The bill will now move forward to Gov. Ron DeSantis for consideration.
