5 specialties with the biggest pay increases

Hospitalist-internal medicine is the specialty that saw the biggest jump in median pay from 2022 to 2023, according to Sullivan Cotter’s 2022-23 “Physician Compensation and Productivity Report.”

The report includes data on more than 306,000 physicians and advanced practice providers from 920 hospitals, health systems and medical groups. Only specialties with a minimum of 500 physician respondents are included in the report.

Here are the five specialities that saw the largest increases in median total cash compensation from 2022 to 2023: 

Hospitalist-internal medicine

Median compensation: $326,417

Percent change: 14

Family medicine with obstetrics

Median compensation: $289,931

Percent change: 13

Neonatal-perinatal

Median compensation: $332,880

Percent change: 13

Pediatrics

Median compensation: $270,666

Percent change: 12

Medical oncology

Median compensation: $406,258

Percent change: 11
