The American Association for Physician Leadership has published “Lessons Learned: Stories from Dual-Physician Marriages,” a collection of first-person accounts from 35 physician couples across the U.S. The book is edited by Deborah M. Shlian, MD, and Joel N. Shlian, MD, who have been married 54 years and contributed a chapter about their own relationship.
The featured couples span 2 to 54 years of marriage and represent a range of specialties, practice settings and geographic locations. Contributors include Shikha Jain, MD, and Shakthi Dharan Kumar, MD; Eliza Lo Chin, MD, and Douglas Chin, MD; and Bryan Becker, MD, and Yolanda Becker, MD, among others. The book distills 20 evidence-based lessons on managing dual medical careers, covering topics such as training separations, household division of labor, raising children and maintaining intimacy amid demanding schedules.
