University of Chicago Medicine is launching two new physician residency programs — a family medicine program and an internal medicine program — at UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, Ill., to build a permanent physician pipeline for Chicago’s southern reach.
According to a Sept. 2 news release, the family medicine residency will begin with eight residents and grow to 24 at full capacity, while the internal medicine residency will start with 16 and reach 48, both structured as three-year programs. Family medicine applications opened Sept. 2, and internal medicine applications are expected to open in late September. The first residents start in July 2027, with both programs reaching full staffing by 2029.
A $5 million grant from the Ingalls Development Foundation is funding renovations to support the new programs, alongside a BridgeGME Chicago grant shared with the Chicago School’s Illinois College of Osteopathic Medicine and the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Residents will train at Ingalls, where roughly one-third of patients are covered by Medicaid, with pediatric rotations at UChicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital in Hyde Park.
“This investment is about more than launching two residency programs. It’s about strengthening the physician workforce,” said Mike Antoniades, president of UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial.
Roxanne Smith, MD, and John Yoon, MD will direct the family medicine and internal medicine programs, respectively, under Lakshmi Warrior, MD, chief medical officer at UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial, as the health system works to keep more physicians practicing in a Southland service area where nearly one in five residents live below the federal poverty level.
