Are physicians willing to take pay cuts for more autonomy, work-life balance?

Seventy-one percent of physicians have taken or would consider taking pay cuts for more autonomy or work-life balance, according to Doximity’s “2023 Physician Compensation Report.”

The report, released March 23, consists of 31,000 self-reported physician compensation surveys that were completed between January and December 2022. The autonomy and work-life balance poll consists of 3,000 physician responses that were recorded in December 2022 and January 2023. Read more about the methodology here.

Here’s how physicians responded to the poll question, “Would you be willing to accept lower compensation to achieve more autonomy or work-life balance?” according to the report: 

Yes, I would consider it: 36 percent

Yes, and I already have: 35 percent

No, probably not: 13 percent

No, definitely not: 12 percent

Unsure: 4 percent
