Representatives in Alabama have proposed a bill that aims to address the ongoing physician shortage by changing the state’s existing rural physician tax credit program, ABC News 3340 reported Jan. 12.
The bill would increase the current program’s annual incentive from $5,000 to $10,000. Beginning in 2027, qualifying physicians who live and practice in rural areas may receive the credit for up to four years, according to the report.
The bill also introduces oversight measures that would require state agencies to certify eligibility and monitor whether the program effectively expands access to healthcare. If passed, the bill would take effect Oct. 1, 2027.
