UW Medicine appoints Dr. Ajay Gopal chair in cancer care

Ajay Gopal, MD, has been named the Stephen Petersdorf Endowed Chair in cancer care at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.

Dr. Gopal currently serves as director of clinical research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and a professor of medical oncology at UW Medicine, according to a Jan. 26 release. He is also the medical director for Fred Hutch’s hematology and hematologic malignancy program.

The endowed chair will support Dr. Gopal and his team as they work to develop treatments through the lymphoma and hematologic malignancy program Fred Hutch and UW Medicine.

The chair position was renamed in 2015 to honor the late Stephen Petersdorf, MD, who became the first to hold the cancer care chair position in 2001 and specialized in the treatment of leukemia and lymphoma.
