CDC appoints Dr. Nirav Shah principal deputy director

The CDC has appointed Nirav Shah, MD, as principal deputy director. He will become second in leadership under CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, MD, in March.

Dr. Shah has served as the director of the Maine Center for Disease Control since June 2019, according to a Jan. 12 release from the state agency. His appointment was part of an overhaul of the agency announced by Dr. Walensky in 2022. 

Prior to his role in Maine, Dr. Shah served as director of the Illinois Department of Public Health from 2015 to 2019, according to LinkedIn. He also worked as an attorney for six years.
