Dr. Ayala steps into the position following the retirement of Steven Shelov, MD, the school’s founding dean. She has overseen the Office of Students and Diversity and MD admissions for the school since 2018.
Dr. Ayala served as vice dean under Dr. Shelov, during which she led the school’s strategic planning process. She has also taught as a professor of medicine at the school and has been a medical educator since 1994.
Before coming to NYU Long Island, she was the vice chancellor for university student affairs and interim vice dean at New York Medical College’s School of Medicine in Valhalla, N.Y.
