Physician salaries changed by at least $120,000 over 15 years in 12 states, according to a report published May 13 in the Journal of the Society of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeons.
Analyzing data from over 213,000 medical practices from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the report analyzes the popular narrative of a dying private practice model and addresses differences in compensation across practice settings and subspecialties. It also notes how inconsistencies in data, particularly regarding ownership, complicate the full picture of who actually owns and controls these practices.
Here are three takeaways from the report:
1. All states saw physicians’ annual mean salaries change by at least $40,000 from 2007 to 2022.
2. Eleven states and the District of Columbia saw a change of at least $120,000, including:
- Idaho
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Kentucky
- Minnesota
- Montana
- Nebraska
- New Hampshire
- North Dakota
- Ohio
- Wisconsin
3. Of those states, Montana and North Dakota saw a change of more than $160,000.
