Physician-owned hospitals continue to be a topic of debate within the healthcare industry, with many hospital groups taking aim at the facilities.

Here are five numbers to know about physician-owned hospitals:

250+: The number of physician-led hospitals in the U.S., according to a report from Physician-Led Healthcare for America.

75: The estimated number of physician-led hospitals in development.

$1.1 billion: The amount physician-led hospitals saved in 2019 compared to traditional facilities, based on analysis of the cost of 20 of the most expensive conditions for Medicare patients.

8%-15%: The percentage lower total payments are for physician-owned hospitals compared to traditional facilities for some of the most expensive diagnostic groups.

Three: The number of physician-owned hospital closures that Becker’s has reported on since August.
