6 stats on the physician workforce

Here are six stats to know on the physician workforce, according to the Association of American Medical College’s 2022 Physician Specialty Data Report:

  1. There are an estimated 950,000 active physicians in the 50 U.S. states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico.
  2. Primary care specialties were the most common, with 120,342 practicing internal medicine, 118,641 practicing family medicine and 60,305 practicing pediatrics.
  3. 37.1 percent of the active physician workforce is female.
  4. 46.7 percent of the active physician workforce is aged 55 or older.
  5. Child and adolescent psychiatrists are the most likely specialty to practice in the same state they were trained in,, with 57 percent practicing where they were trained.
  6. 63.9 percent of practicing physicians identified as White, 20.6 percent as Asian, 6.9 percent as Hispanic and 5.7 percent as Black or African American.
