Tuesday, May 2: Members of the Committee of Interns and Residents, a union that represents about 170 resident physicians who work at Elmhurst Hospital and are employed by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, vote to authorize a strike.
Union members claim Mount Sinai is not offering physicians who work at the public hospital salaries up to parity with non-unionized residents working at Mount Sinai facilities in wealthier parts of the city.
At the time, Mount Sinai told Becker’s it had offered a counter-proposal and was committed to resolving the situation.
Friday, May 19: Mount Sinai says it offered the union its “last, best and final offer,” which would have given residents 5 percent to 7 percent raises annually over the next three years in a final bargaining update.
Monday, May 22: More than 150 physicians begin the planned five-day walkout that represents the first physician strike at a New York City hospital since 1990.
Meanwhile, members of the Committee of Interns and Residents vote to authorize a strike at Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West, with over 99 percent of the 500 physicians represented by the union voting to strike.
Wednesday, May 24: Union members and Mount Sinai reach a tentative agreement, three days into the strike at NYC Health + Hospitals’ Elmhurst Hospital Center.
The agreement includes a $2,000 ratification bonus for physicians and an 18 percent wage increase over the next three years. The physicians also secured an enforceable agreement to negotiate on hazard pay and a meal allowance that reaches parity with Mount Sinai Hospital residents, along with holiday pay and graduate medical education leave.
Thursday, May 25: Residents participating in the strike are slated to return to work following the agreement.
