UPMC, physician to pay $8.5M to settle false claims allegations

James Luketich, MD, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and University of Pittsburgh Physicians have finalized a settlement agreement to resolve a lawsuit filed against them in September 2021.

The lawsuit was filed under the False Claims Act and alleged that Dr. Luketich would perform several surgeries at the same time, violating the statutes and regulations that prohibit "teaching physicians" from billing the United States for "concurrent surgeries," according to a Feb. 27 release from the Department of Justice.

As part of the settlement, the defendants agreed to pay $8.5 million to resolve the claims against them and establish a corrective action plan for Dr. Luketich.
