Hawaii physician arrested for unlawfully prescribing opioids after sting operation

Chris Boulange, MD, was arrested March 21 following a criminal complaint for four counts of unlawful distribution of controlled substances.

According to the affidavit, Dr. Boulange, who practices in Wailuku, Hawaii, met with an undercover agent four times outside of a medical office from July to November 2022, either at a bar or restaurant, during which he allegedly prescribed the agent hydrocodone, alprazolam and diazepam.

The criminal complaint against him states these prescriptions were given without a legitimate purpose and outside the usual course of professional practice, according to a March 22 news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Hawaii. Charges were filed March 2.

The case is also under investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration in partnership with the Hawaii State Sheriff's Division, Honolulu Police Department and Maui Police Department.
