4 Duke School of medicine physicians honored with early-career award

Four Raleigh, N.C.-based Duke University School of Medicine physician leaders have been selected to receive the 2023 physician-scientist "Strong Start" awards. 

The award supports early-career physician-scientists who are developing their own research programs. Each of the four recipients will receive a $75,000 grant from the university. 

Recipients include Leah Acker, MD, PhD; Oleg Alekseev, MD, PhD; Ammon Fager, MD, PhD; and Daniel Nussbaum, MD, according to a Jan. 25 press release. 

Dr. Acker is an assistant professor in Duke's department of anesthesiology. Dr. Alekseev is a medical instructor in the department of ophthalmology. 

Dr. Fager is an assistant professor in the department of medicine, and Dr. Nussbaum is an assistant professor in the department of surgery.
